Steuben County Health Care Facility History
Steuben County Health Care Facility
***Over 165 Years ***
Started in 1834 as the County Poor House and Farm, the Steuben County Health Care Facility has remained a cornerstone of the community in its efforts to assist its residents in achieving an optimal quality of life.
The complex originally consisted of two hundred acres and several separate buildings across the road from the present facility. Largely self-sufficient, the original facility provided care to "paupers, orphaned children, and the mentally and physically disadvantaged." The evolution of the facility consisted of the replacement of the original buildings with brick buildings in 1859, 1860 and 1878.
The first name change occurred in the early 1950's. The facility became known as the Steuben County Public Home and Infirmary. It served a total of seventy-one residents, in addition to numerous "transients", began to address more health care issues and concerns of its population.
In 2008, a modern replacement facility was built to care for up to 105 residents who are in need of Short Term Rehabilitation, Palliative care or Long Term care. The new building provides more spacious areas for resident care as well as a Rehabilitation Service, (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy), that serves residents and out patients.
